Do cover letters still matter in 2025? Yes — when they're good. Most cover letters are generic, boring, and get deleted in 10 seconds. But a great cover letter can leapfrog you over better-qualified candidates. Here's how to write one.
The Truth About Cover Letters in 2025
Studies show 83% of hiring managers say cover letters influence their decision when they're choosing between candidates of similar qualifications. At the same time, 76% of recruiters say most cover letters are so generic they don't bother reading them.
The bar is low. Stand out by actually being specific.
The Perfect Cover Letter Structure
- 1.Opening line that grabs attention (NOT "I am applying for...")
- 2.One paragraph: why THIS company specifically
- 3.One paragraph: your most relevant achievement with numbers
- 4.One paragraph: why you're the right fit + what you'd bring
- 5.Short closing with a clear call to action
Opening Lines That Actually Get Read
- •"When I saw Stripe's job posting for a Product Manager, I had to apply — I've been using your product for 3 years and have 14 pages of product feedback notes."
- •"In my last role, I grew our email revenue from $40K to $380K in 18 months. I'd love to bring that same energy to [Company Name]."
- •"I've read every engineering blog post you've published in the last year. Your approach to distributed systems is exactly the kind of problem I want to work on next."
"I am writing to apply for the position of..." or "My name is [name] and I am very interested in..." These openers signal a generic letter and recruiters stop reading immediately.
The One Paragraph That Wins Interviews
Your middle paragraph should contain one specific, quantified achievement that's directly relevant to the role. Not three vague achievements — one specific, impressive one. "At [Company], I led a team that rebuilt our checkout flow, reducing abandonment by 31% and adding $2.4M in annual revenue."
How Long Should a Cover Letter Be?
Maximum 300 words. Three to four paragraphs. If you can't make your case in 300 words, you haven't edited enough. Recruiters don't have time for lengthy essays.
